Getting Things Done - Life Without a GUI
Start: Oct 09, 12:00 p.m.
End: Oct 09, 1:00 p.m.
Location: 203 (map)

I hope to ease the nerves of the CLI timid, by showing that the command line is not some obscure environment for hackers but a welcoming non-obtrusive comfortable haven to get the same things done that you would otherwise do in a GUI. Basically, how to do everything a desktop user does in a GUI, but in the CLI. I will hope to answer the following questions. How does one manage, view, create and edit .doc/.docx/.odt and other file formats in the CLI? How about spreadsheets and slideshows? How does one browse the Internet, check email, watch youtube videos without a GUI? How about burn a CD/DVD, play Quake II, watch a movie or DVD, view or edit a PDF or image? What if you need to balance your check book on the CLI or need a great note-taking app or manage your time better? I will show you how. I will not go into depth into any one application, instead I will give brief demonstrations of how you can get things done without a GUI and provide a resource of CLI applications to wet the palette of the attendees so they can investigate without fear on their own.
