Big Iron Linux - SUSE Linux on the IBM zSeries Mainframe
Datacenters are a big deal, and anyone that has dealt with a large datacenter can tell you just how difficult it can be to maintain large numbers of systems and making sure everything is evenly distributed throughout the whole system. Virtualization certainly has helped with this problem, but there is still a lot of work involved making virtualization operate properly.
On the other hand, anyone that has worked with a mainframe knows that reliability and scalability are just something that Big Iron "just does". Virtualization is something IBM has had perfected in their mainframes for over 30 years now. But applications for zSeries hardware are expensive and often quite complicated.
Fortunately, through IBM's z/VM platform, the vast library of Linux applications is available to mainframe operators. This course presents the attendees with an overview of Linux on IBM mainframes. The key benefits are explained and an example system is demonstrated. The purpose of this presentation is to allow attendees to become familiar with Linux on an IBM mainframe and see a system in operation.
John has been working with computers for over 25 years, starting with rewriting sections of Applesoft BASIC, to currently maintaining the SUSE Linux kernel on IBM zSeries mainframes. John is particularly interested in machine learning and evolutionary programming, but only treats it as a hobby as he has a wife to spoil and four sons to socially engineer.
